Poetry.. THE VETERAN..........
THE VETERAN...............
Someone was knocking at my door,
I opened it to give that person what for,
There stood this man in ragged clothes,
With a smell that got up my nose.
To me he looked like a tramp, a rover,
A man, who had seen the world all over,
Then he said, have you any food for me,
Bread and cheese, goes well with a mug of tea.
I gave him what he had asked for,
And I then began to close my door,
Looking at him ,I felt somehow weak,
He gave a cough, and began to speak,
Telling me, that through the years,
He had toiled blood, sweat, and tears,
He had fought in bitter wars,
And knew the meaning of, true cause,
Shot in the head,, gave him nasty fits,
Lucky he was not also blown to bits,
He said he had fought for his country,
On return, no one wanted me,
I looked at him tears welling in my eyes,
And suddenly I began to realize,
Me with food , roof over my head,, did see
That this man had fought wars ,to give them to me
Then he said , thank you Mrs,
And covered back of my hand with his kisses,
Good bye he said, as he trudged down the lane
And that man of courage I never saw again...
